Remedies

  1. Check that all applications are closed. If not, close all applications and try again.
  2. In Windows NT, 2000 and XP, check that you are logged in as an administrator.
  3. Try restarting your computer and reinstalling

Sometimes low-level Windows NT, 2000 or XP services that you cannot easily disable may lock libraries and give rise to this error.

In spite of the error message, you will usually find that the installation has been successful.

To prevent this from happening, choose Custom Installation of Office. Then ensure that you uncheck the option to remove earlier versions of Microsoft Access.

This error sometimes occurs if you attempt to re-install a product using a CD-ROM that contains a different version from that originally installed.

  1. Locate the product data files (for the RCM Toolkit, Database.rcm and Users.rcw). Make several verified backups of these files on removeable media.
  2. Delete the software product folder (see here for default locations)
  3. Install the software
  4. Restore the product data files from your backup into your RCM Toolkit folder
Software installation on a computer that has Office 2000 installed

Software installation CD-ROMs supplied since the official release of Office 2000 install successfully alongside an installation of Microsoft Office 2000 or XP.

For earlier versions, you may need to carry out the following steps to successfully install the software if Office 2000 or Access 2000 is already present on the workstation. If you are uncertain about these instructions, please contact a member of your IS staff.

  1. Locate the Microsoft Office folder. The default installation location is \Program Files\Microsoft Office.
  2. Note the existing name and rename the Office folder (say, as "Microsoft Office 1")
  3. The system may complain that registry entries will be rendered invalid. Ignore the warnings and continue.
  4. Install the software
  5. Rename the Microsoft Office folder back to its original name
