"The attached database could not be upgraded to the current version. Could not open attached database ..." (version 7 only)

This error can occur because the version 7 installation must be carried out by a Windows system administrator, but your normal user account does not have administrator rights. The Toolkit folder is created by the system administrator during installation, but the user account has no access rights to the installation folder.

Remedy

  1. Log on to the workstation as a system administrator.
  2. Locate the installation folder. The default location is C:\Program Files\RCM Toolkit\7.0
  3. Right-click on the folder, select Properties and the Security tab. Ensure that your normal user account (or the group "Users") has read, write and modify access rights to the folder.

Under Windows XP you may need to disable simple file sharing in order to see the advanced file security settings. To disable simple file sharing:

  1. Open My Computer .
  2. Select Tools/Folder options...
  3. On the View tab, uncheck Use simple file sharing.
Application breaks after installing Office 2000/XP

Applications may fail to start correctly after installing Office 2000 or Office XP. You may see the error:

"You do not have permission to convert or enable the database"

This error occurs because the default Office 2000/XP installation code removes all trace of earlier versions of Access. Although you may want the new version of Office to remove Office 97, unfortunately it also removes the run-time version of Access that the application uses.

To prevent this from happening, choose Custom Installation of Office. Then ensure that you uncheck the option to remove earlier versions of Microsoft Access.

If you have already installed Office 2000/XP and have lost the run-time version of Access 97, follow the instructions below.

"Can't update. Database or object is read-only. Error code 3027" on starting application

One or more of the application data files is read-only. For the RCM Toolkit these files are:

Common reasons for this are as follows.

  1. You have read-only access to the folder or network drive containing your data files. Note that you must have read, write, create and delete permissions for the folder to use the Toolkit in a network environment.
  2. The database file is read-only. This may happen if you have copied the file from a CD-ROM or some other read-only medium.
  3. The drive containing the data files is read-only.

These errors are caused by incompatibilities between Microsoft libraries, or by a problem encountered but not reported during installation. It may also be caused by installation of third party software which overwrites system libraries with incompatible versions.

Copies of the OCX controls and executable files required to fix this problem are on your installation CD-ROM in the folder \OCX Controls. If you are at all uncertain about these instructions, please ask a member of your IS staff to carry out the fix for you, or email us for clarification.
